We are very lucky to have brave fire fighters, police officers, and military people to protect us and keep us safe every single day. September 11, 2001 was a day we needed them the most. Although something very bad happened on that day, it is important to focus on the helpers and the strength of America. Instead of being afraid, our country came together to help and support each other more than ever. We should show them our thanks everyday.
9-11 was a very sad day for our country. On September 11, 2001, the World Trade Center Twin Towers in New York City were attacked. Four planes were hijacked by bad people who wanted to try to harm our country. Sadly, two planes crashed into the Twin Towers, one plane crashed into the Pentagon (Defense building), and one crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. The Twin Towers fell a short time later. Almost 3,000 people lost their lives, including fire fighters and police officers.

During and after the attacks, brave fire fighters and police officers tried to help people get out of the towers and get to safety. They helped people on the streets who were injured. They helped many people and worked for a very long time. They are true heroes.
Now, there is a memorial at Ground Zero in New York where the Twin Towers stood. People visit this every day to remember those who lost their lives and remember the unity of our country. There is also a new World Trade Tower next to the memorials.
The strength of our first responders and unity of our country is one important reason why we stand respectfully and recite The Pledge of Allegiance. We will never forget the sacrifices they made.
